NOVA SCOTIA'S FIRST INDIAN RESERVES: 1801

In 1801 the colonial government set aside 8,560 acres of lands on mainland Nova Scotia as "Indian Reserves." These were situated in places the government described as "in such situations as they have been in the habit of frequenting."

The first Indian Reserves set aside in Nova Scotia in 1801:

Afton and Pomquet .....1,000 acres
St. Margaret's Bay ......... 500 acres
Gold River ..................... 960 acres
Port Medway .............. 1,000 acres
Bear River .................. 1,000 acres
New Ross .................... 1,000 acres
Shinimcas ................... 1,000 acres
Grand Lake ................. 1,000 acres
Shubenacadie ............... 100 acres
Shubenacadie (1820) .. 1,000 acres
Total ................. 8,560 acres
