Obituary of Isabelle Theresa Knockwood

KNOCKWOOD, (B.A, M.A. Hon DLC) Dr. Isabelle Theresa - age 89 of Indian Brook, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2020 in The Mira, Truro. Born in Wolfville, she was a daughter of the late John and Theresa (Simon) Knockwood.

Isabelle was given her Spirt name, Maqmikewe’skw, which means Mother Earth. She was a survivor of the Residential School in Shubenacadie and is the author of Out of the Depths. Isabelle was a strong and unyielding advocate of aboriginal rights, education and identity. Involved with the formation of the Boston Indian Council, and remained an Active Alumni of St. Mary’s University.

Isabelle is survived by her children, Frances Rose, Joseph Douglas, Ivette Diane, Valerie Annette, Karl David; 11 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; sister, Rose Morris; several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Isabelle was predeceased by her son, Alfred Joseph; siblings, Henry, Noel and Joseph.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 28 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm and Wednesday, July 29 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm in Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Highway 2, Shubenacadie. COVID-19 restrictions will apply. Social distancing and masks are strongly encouraged.

A traditional graveside ceremony will be held 10 am, Thursday, July 30 at in St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Indian Brook.
